Q: What is an air straightener, and what are they used for?
A: Performance MRP honeycomb air straighteners screens, available in 5mm & 6mm cell sizes, are aerospace grade 5052 aluminum honeycomb. Our air straighteners are suitable for high-temp applications, they will hold up to being exposed to fuels as well as methanol injection.
Our air straightener screens are used to aid in creating a laminar air flow at the mass air flow sensor. This will improve readings “fuel trim” from the MAF sensor, that ECU is seeing. Fix lean and rich spikes, increase throttle response, and improve idle.
Q: How do I install an air straightener in my intake or MAF housing?
A: Your air straightener screen should be installed in the intake track before the mass air flow sensor. Typically air straighteners are installed 2-4 inches from the sensor. The air straightener screen can be installed using glue, epoxy, by brazing, or riveting. Performance MRP installs all of our own air flow straightener screens using rivets.
