Q: What is an air straightener, and what are they used for?

Performance MRP honeycomb air straighteners screens, available in 5mm (3/16") & 6mm (1/4") cell sizes, are aerospace grade 5052 aluminum honeycomb. Our air straighteners are suitable for high-temp applications, they will hold up to being exposed to fuels as well as methanol injection. Our air straightener screens are used to aid in creating a laminar air flow at the mass air flow sensor. This will improve readings “fuel trim” from the MAF sensor, that ECU is seeing. Fix lean and rich spikes, increase throttle response, and improve idle.

Q: How do I measure for a screen?

Measure the outer diameter (OD) of where the screen will be installed. We use calipers but a ruler/tape measure will work, just round up - material can always be trimmed off but it can’t be added..

Q: Which size screen do I need?

1/4” works well for most of our customers and is the default style we install in our MRP housings. 1/4” screens tend to be easier to install if you are doing it yourself.

Q: What is the difference in the screen cell sizes?

The smaller screen size (3/16”) has a greater air-straightening effect. This is typically suggested for customers with particularly challenging MAF signal issues. Examples are if the MAF sensor is located very close to sharp bends, throttle bodies, turbo chargers, etc.

Q: How do I install an air straightener in my intake or MAF housing?

Your air straightener screen should be installed in the intake track before the mass air flow sensor. Typically air straighteners are installed 2-4 inches from the sensor. The air straightener screen can be installed using glue, epoxy, by brazing, or riveting. Performance MRP installs all of our own air flow straightener screens using rivets approx. 3" from the sensor with great success. Do not leave any bends between the screen and sensor and not let the screen touch the sensor.

Q: Is tuning required when I install a larger/smaller diameter mass air flow housing?

Tuning is application dependent. Generally speaking, tuning will be required when you increase/decrease the diameter of your mass air flow housing.

Q: How do I know the outside diameter (OD) of my OEM MAF housing?

Measure it! A ruler/tape measure will do the job. If you don't have your MAF housing, measure the outside diameter (OD) of the OEM throttle-body or the Inner Diameter (ID) of whatever held the OEM MAF housing. We do not keep track of this info because there are too many applications.

You can also use the string trick if you can't uninstall your pieces to measure the circumference. Wrap a string around the MAF housing and then measure that length against a tape measure or ruler and divide that number by 3.14 to get your outer diameter (OD).

Q: How do I know which MAF housings or flange I need for my vehicle?

Please refer to the home page’s vehicle identifier and enter your vehicle information. If nothing comes up, please email Ashley@mrpmanufacturing.com to determine the correct vehicle fit-up, or shoot us a message on Facebook!

Q: Why is the description on my receipt different than what I ordered?

Check your SKU/ITEM #. Our parts fit many makes and models because sensors are utilized across a variety of vehicles. Our shipping system sometimes pulls a different description than what you ordered on the website. However, as long as your SKU matches what you ordered, you're good to go!

Q: Is my item in stock?

We work hard to keep our inventory accurate and our items well-stocked and ready to ship! We typically ship within 1 business day of your order. If you see the item online, it’s in stock!

Q: You do not have the diameter/size/length that I need of a product?

We frequently fabricate one-off versions of our parts for home mechanics, and for performance shops. Please email us, Ashley@performancemrp.com, with the details of what you need for your project and we will reply promptly.

Q: Do you manufacture custom parts?

Yes, we frequently work on custom projects for individuals as well as manufacture proprietary parts for performance companies, Performance MRP has a full service machine shop that specializes in prototype & production machining. Please email, Ashley@performancemrp.com, with a description of what you need, a blueprint or drawing of the part if possible, and any photos that you may have. We will reply promptly.

Q: Will deleting the secondary air injection system cause my check engine light to come on?

Yes, deleting your secondary air injection system will cause your check engine light to come on. This can be corrected with tuning. Modifying any part of your emissions system is for off-road use only vehicles, please be aware of your local laws before modifying your vehicle
